Roofing in New Zealand isn’t a one-size-fits-all job. Between the coastal salt, inland frost, subtropical humidity, and intense UV, our climate hits harder than most. That’s why the steel you choose needs to be more than just tough, it needs to be tested for here.

At Guardian Steel, we manufacture roofing profiles that are built to take on New Zealand’s unique environmental challenges. From the metal coatings to the paint systems, every layer is chosen with performance in mind.

Salt Air Wrecks Cheap Steel

If you’ve ever worked near the coast, you know what salt can do to cheap cladding. Rust can creep in fast, especially if the steel has low-quality galvanising or poor edge protection.

That’s why our steel options are rated up to ISO9223 C5, the highest marine exposure classification. Depending on the distance from the coast, we match steel with the appropriate metallic coating and paint finish to protect against salt corrosion.

For example:

  • Inland rural site? A C1 or C2 grade will do.

  • Within 500 metres of the sea? You’ll need C4 protection at a minimum.

  • On the water’s edge? We’ll spec you for C5 with the right warranty to back it.

New Zealand UV is Brutal

NZ has some of the highest levels of ultraviolet radiation in the world. That means colour fade, chalking, and paint failure are real risks, especially for roofs exposed all day with little shade.

Guardian Steel uses paint systems designed to resist breakdown under UV. With topcoat layers of up to 20 microns and primers that hold adhesion, our steel retains its colour and finish far longer than entry-level imports.

Temperature Swings Hit Fasteners and Flashings

Inland zones like Central Otago or Canterbury deal with hot days and freezing nights, even within a single 24-hour window. That puts pressure on roof fixings, causing thermal movement that can stretch, crack, or warp weaker materials.

That’s why our steel profiles are roll-formed precisely and supplied with detailed span tables and installation specs. Proper fit, fastener spacing, and expansion joints are essential, especially in areas where roofs get baked during the day and frosted by morning.

Rain, Wind, and the Everyday Stuff

It’s not always dramatic, but day-to-day rain and wind can wear out a roof faster than you think. That’s why we recommend regular manual washing for sheltered areas and make sure every profile is easy to clean and maintain.

Our profiles — corrugated and trapezoidal — are shaped to handle water flow, channel runoff, and resist uplift from strong wind zones. Everything is manufactured in Auckland to meet NZ building code and tested for real site conditions.

Choose Steel That’s Made for This Place

Whether you’re roofing a house in windy Taranaki, a shed in salty Bluff, or a warehouse in hot Hawke’s Bay, the weather matters. And so does the steel.

At Guardian Steel, we combine premium Korean steel with local manufacturing and years of roofing experience to deliver product that performs where it counts, outside, in the real world.
